Scott Free? No Chance, Feds Say

Rothstein gets out of jail for hospital trip, still in custody

It's likely he's not sipping martinis at Bova Prime or deplaning a private jet in Morocco, but people are wondering where Ponzi schemer Scott Rothstein went after got out of prison over the weekend.

Rothstein was released Friday from the Miami detention center which has become his home the past few months to go to the hospital, but yesterday, even his lawyer didn't know where he was.

"I was advised he's in transit, that he's in the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service," attorney Marc Nurik told the Sun-Sentinel. "He's not with prosecutors, he's not talking to the government, he had a medical incident last week and he was taken out to the hospital."

Rothstein pleaded guilty to running a $1.2 billion Ponzi scheme in January, and the possibility of life behind bars seems to be weighing on him.

The 47-year-old has been taking meds for anxiety and suffering from high blood pressure and high cholesterol.

Nurik didn't say why the trip to the hospital was necessary.

The U.S. Marshals assured the public that Rothstein is still in federal custody.

Rothstein, who is facing a maximum of 100 years behind bars, is set to be sentenced on May 6.
