Scottish Soldier May Have Been Victim of Hit-and-Run in Miami

The Scottish soldier who was found dead near a busy Miami intersection after attending the Ultra Music Festival may have been the victim of a hit-and-run, police said Friday.

Just after dawn last Sunday, 22-year-old Shaun Cole was found dead on the sidewalk at Biscayne Boulevard and Northeast 81st Street.

A passerby said he saw Cole walking before he collapsed on the sidewalk with blood coming out of his ears.

NBC 6 has learned that detectives told Cole's parents their son might have been the victim of a hit-and-run. They're still awaiting a ruling from the Miami-Dade Medical Examiner.

Cole served in the 1st Battalion, The Royal Regiment of Scotland (1SCOTS), and had served in Afghanistan and had recently returned from Sierra Leone, where soldiers have been involved in the Ebola aid effort.

The Scottish Army said in a statement on behalf of Cole's family reiterated that police are looking into the possibility of a hit-and-run.

"We would like to inform everyone that Miami Police are now following a line of inquiry that would suggest that Shaun was involved in a hit and run incident. We would like to thank Miami Police and Consular staff and everyone who has offered support to our family over the last few days," the statement read.

Anyone with information is urged to contact Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers at 305-471-TIPS.
