A loggerhead sea turtle found itself in a hairy situation when it had to be rescued out of an intake pump at an FPL power plant in Port Everglades.
Officers with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission worked Monday to free the trapped turtle from the pump with a rake normally used for clearing trash out of the area.
The officers were able to safely remove the adventurous reptile from the pump, then took it out to sea where it was released back into the ocean.
“It was a great feeling to end up saving the life of an endangered sea turtle,” said Lt. Rob Laubenberger, one of the FWC officers who helped free the turtle. “Usually we respond to calls where the situation is serious. But in this case, a bad scenario had a good outcome.”
Loggerhead turtles are currently listed as a threatened species in Florida, according to the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service.
