SeaWorld Fined in Killer Whale Trainer's Death

$75,000 fine for safety violations at Orlando attraction

Nearly six months after a killer whale drowned a SeaWorld trainer at the Orlando attraction, the park was hit with a $75,000 fine for safety violations that led to the death.

The federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration issued the fine on Monday for the Feb. 24 death of trainer Dawn Brancheau.

Three violations were issued in Brancheau's death, including one willful violation for indifference or intentional disregard for employee safety. Another OSHA fine was for failing to install a stairway railing system near the whale tank stage.

Brancheau, 40, was dragged underwater and drowned by 12,000 pound Tilikum shortly after a show and in front of several park guests who were still in the audience.

The 6-ton whale was pulled from all SeaWorld shows in the wake of Brancheau's killing, with no trainers allowed to join him in the water.
