What to Know

  • Davie Police confirmed that 62-year-old Carlos Rodriguez died as a result of his injuries.

A second cyclist has died following a weekend crash involving a vehicle that struck a group as they were bicycling down a Broward County road, officials said Tuesday.

Davie Police confirmed that 62-year-old Carlos Rodriguez died as a result of his injuries after being one of seven people taken to the hospital following the incident Sunday morning along the 14000 block of State Road 84 eastbound.

Another victim, 53-year-old Denise Marsh, died at the hospital Sunday morning. Four other people, including a 14-year-old, were treated and released while another person remains in the hospital in critical condition.

The driver, 33-year-old Nicole Vanderweit, told police she had gotten distracted by something in her glove compartment, in addition to the sun shining directly in her face when she struck the group of nearly 20 cyclists.

Police say she has been cooperative and has not been charged as of yet.

The crash has left the cycling community asking why and how to stop incidents like this from happening again.

"People right now are scared. People don't want to go out on bikes," John Durango, owner of Durango Bikes in Pembroke Pines said. β€œThey just want to have fun. It’s sad to see people get killed trying to do good things only."
