Second Miami Beach Police Officer Infected with Zika Virus

The officer was not identified, but Florid State's FOP order said the officer works in the city's "Zika Zone".

A second Miami Beach Police Officer has contracted the Zika virus, according to the Florida State Fraternal Order of Police.

The organization announced the second case in a press release Tuesday.

The officer was not identified, but the fraternal order said the officer works in the city's "Zika Zone".

This comes three weeks after Miami Beach sergeant Michelle Sayegh revealed she contracted the infection.

In the wake of the two Zika cases, a battle is brewing between the fraternal order and the city of Miami Beach over benefits for the infected officers.

Sayegh was denied workers compensation coverage for treatment of the Zika virus.

"The City Of Miami Beach offering free Zika testing does not mitigate the need for their coverage of the employees that they place at risk," said Bobby Jenkins, President of the FOP.

In response, Florida State's FOP will push for a workers compensation coverage measure for the 2017 legislative session.

"We have growing concerns that the local leaders will continue to require their employees to work in these dangerous areas, while having no intention of protecting them if they grow ill," Jenkins said in a statement.
