Seven Local Organizations Receive $225,000 in Grants From NBC 6, Telemundo 51 & NBCUniversal Foundation

Seven South Florida non-profit organizations received a total of $225,000 in grants as part of the second annual Project Innovation grant challenge.

The grants were given to the organizations by NBC 6, Telemundo 51 and the NBCUniversal Foundation. The winning organizations were selected by the stations for their outstanding innovative programs created to solve everyday problems.

“We are honored to present the Project Innovation grant awards to those wonderful organizations and our goal is to continue to support those who strive to make a difference every single day,” said Larry Olevitch, President and General Manager at NBC 6.

Communities in Schools of Miami received $50,000. The organization’s Bridges to Graduation and Beyond program provides holistic support to Miami-Dade County Schools students who face high levels of adversity in their lives. With the grant, students will receive clean clothes, a ride to school, mentoring and a plethora of other services.

Urgent, Inc received $50,000. Their Film Arts Culture Coding and Entrepreneurship program provides talent development opportunities to teenagers who have low access to building high value skills. The program aims to remove the barriers those students face by giving them a competitive advantage.

The Miami Children’s Museum received $40,000. The museum’s Multi-Sensory Access Program will provide South Florida families with children in the autism spectrum with an accessible low-cost option for receiving essential therapy.

Broward House received $30,000. Their Skills for Life program teaches essential life skills for adults living with HIV who have experienced homelessness as they transition into independence and manage their health.

Take Stock in Children of Broward received $25,000. Their Achieving Career and College Excellence program provides low-income, academically qualified students with opportunities for post-secondary education. It also helps the organization in its mission to break the cycle of poverty.

The Broward Performing Arts Foundation received $20,000. Their Sensory-Friendly Programming for Audiences with Special Needs program provides students with intellectual and developmental disabilities a variety of opportunities and resources to engage in the same cultural, social and recreational activities as their peers.

Students Care received $10,000. Their South Florida Hospital Buddy program enables college students to engage in their local communities by facilitating partnerships with children’s hospitals, where students are paired with children in long-time care.

The winners were selected in the following categories: community engagement, culture of inclusion next generation storytellers and youth education.
