Sewage Spill Prompts Water Advisory Near North Miami Beach

Officials are advising residents to avoid the water for recreational activities near Oleta River State Park, Haulover Beach and the Intracoastal area following a sewage spill.

Officials announced Sunday that people should avoid swimming, fishing and boating in the affected areas because of a mechanical failure at a pump station. That issue resulted in 720,000 gallons of wastewater to discharge into a storm drain that eventually led into the water way.

The affected areas include Northeast 163rd Street to the north, the Intracoastal to the east; the Haulover Inlet (including Haulover Beach just north of the inlet) to the south and the mainland to the west. Other affected beach areas include the Oleta River State Park beach and the beach located in the City of Bal Harbour just south of the Haulover Inlet.

Officials have placed signs in the affected areas as a reminder.

City officials are working to test the water. The advisory will remain in effect until two days of clear testing occur.
