Sex and Drugs Plague Pompano Beach Park, Residents Say

Residents are demanding action after they say a Pompano Beach park has become a haven for sex and drugs.

People who live near McNab Park in the area of Federal Highway and Atlantic Boulevard say they've seen just about everything.

"There's drug paraphernalia, there's empty wine bottles," said Steven Hoffman, who has a business nearby. "There's drug activity, there's public defecation, you know, sexual activity. There's just all kinds of behavior that doesn't belong in a park where you are supposed to be able to take your kids.

When Hoffman posted photos on social media, he got more than 200 comments from neighbors expressing their frustration.

"It's unbelievable what's going on," Hoffman said.

Broward Sheriff's Office officials said they're aware of the trouble and have assigned deputies to do what they can to stop it. But the deputies can't be everywhere and the drugs have already taken their toll, with officials confirming a recent overdose nearby.

The city said it's not running from the problem and is doing its best to tackle it head-on.

"It's absolutely a problem for all of us. And I am not saying it's not a problem. If the problem is in the park and we address the problem in the park, then the problem moves," Pompano Beach spokesperson Sandra King said.

King said the city has deployed nine rangers to keep an eye on the parks and BSO deputies are taking the homeless to shelters.
