Shoplifting Family Ditches Baby

Mom charged after leaving infant behind at Walmart

Leave the baby, take the Cannoli. Or in this case, cheap clothes.

A South Florida family of shoplifters had no problem ditching an infant when they were confronted by Walmart security Wednesday night, police said.

The bizarre incident happened at the super store at 7300 W. McNab in North Lauderdale around 8:30, when a mother was seen shoplifting with her three kids, ages 13, 11, and 6 months.

According to the Broward Sheriff's Office, the mom, identified by police as 37-year-old Janita Moreau, and her two older kids were stealing merchandise and stuffing it into a diaper bag, purses and the stroller that the tot was being pushed through the store in.

But when the clan of crooks was confronted by security guards as they tried to leave the store, Moreau and her older kids bolted back into the store in an attempt to flee, leaving the baby behind.

The family was caught. The children were all released into the custody of the father of the 6-month-old.

Moreau was charged with shoplifting and child neglect.
