Siesta Key Residents Clean Up Tornado Aftermath

Volunteers with the American Red Cross spent Monday in Siesta Key helping residents who were hit by a tornado early Sunday morning.

For resident Grace Lay, Monday was all about sawing, raking and drilling, getting her backyard back to normal.

"You should see the one behind me, the ditch we have back here," she said of some damage.

Lay has called Sarasota home for 32 years. She says she'll never forget the sounds of an EF2 tornado tearing through her neighborhood early Sunday.

"All of a sudden I heard a big whomp and I jumped out of bed and just as I did the screen came and a chunk of glass just like this came right where I was laying," Lay said. "Good lord wasn't ready for me yet."

Less than 10 minutes away at Phillippi Park is a makeshift resource center, with multiple agencies lending their time, support, and advice to anyone impacted in Manatee and Sarasota counties.

Step outside and you'll find a food truck. Sandwiches, cookies, and something to drink. Hoping to feed those who need it most.

Then it's time to pick up a cleanup or comfort kit. The road to recovery is not always easy, but for Lay there's no slowing down.

"Good Lord's not ready for me yet. My work's not done yet," she said.
