Video Captures Speeding Car Crashing Into Palm Tree

Man and woman dead after car hits tree on U.S.1

Police are investigating after a man and woman were killed in a single-car crash on U.S. 1 in Miami early Monday.

The accident happened around 4:30 a.m. in the area of U.S. 1 near Ponce De Leon Blvd. when the speeding car, a red Volkswagen Jetta, crashed into three large palm trees in the median, police said.

Video of the crash from a nearby business shows the vehicle flying down the curved roadway and then colliding with the tree, causing the palm tree to topple over.

The vehicle was going in excess of 90 mph.

Police have identified the driver as 22-year-old Kia Maiz of Miami. The passenger was 25-year-old Danny Torres of Miami Lakes.

The car hit with enough force to rip one tree from the ground and scatter parts of the car all over the roadway. Police said an engine block was tossed about 125 feet away from from the car came to a stop.

Both people in the car were ejected and pronounced dead at the scene.

Traffic on U.S. 1 between Ponce De Leon Blvd. and Douglas Rd. was shut down early Monday in both directions.
