What to Know

With Thanksgiving just around the corner, millions of people will hit the road and airports on Wednesday heading for their holiday destination – with hundreds of thousands of those travelers both leaving and heading toward South Florida.

Miami International Airport officials say they expect close to 1.5 million people to pass through the airport from November 16th through the 27th – an average of 125,000 a day, which is up a half percent over last year.

At Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport, over 730,000 people are expected during the Thanksgiving week – a number that is up 10 percent over last year.

Both airports say the busiest days will actually be this weekend with people returning home following the holiday.

Motorists are also expected to take to the road with some of the highest numbers in over a decade – fueled in part by gas prices that are down 24 cents over the last month.

Officials remind travelers to pack their patience along with the turkey and stuffing and to plan extra travel time on the roads as well as arriving earlier than normal at the airport to avoid missing your flight.
