South Florida Chills Out

Residents in South Florida spent Wednesday night preparing for the coldest day of the year since January and February.

The cold air isn’t keeping some people from donning their favorite sweater, boots, or other winter gear. For the homeless in Fort Lauderdale, despite the cold, 90-year-old Arnold Abbott was back out to deliver hot food on the cold night.

“I stay at a church garden, but as long as I keep the wind off of me, I’ll be alright,” said Steven West. “I got a couple of blankets I snuggle up with. Plus, I keep plastic around my legs.”

As the homeless worked to stay warm, tourists were also trying to take the cold air, by South Florida standards, in stride. Denise, a tourist from South Dakota actually said it’s not much colder in Fort Lauderdale than it was in her home state.

For others, the cold air wasn’t stopping them from enjoying the area.

“It’s 32 right now in Portland,” said Dan D’Andrea. “Tomorrow, I’ll go fishing in the morning and hanging out at the beach the rest of the day.”
