South Florida Collecting Donations To Help Hurricane-Battered Haiti

As Hurricane Matthew bears down on Haiti, Food for the Poor in Coconut Creek is gearing up a push that will rival the earthquake relief operation six years ago.

The call for donations has just gone out, but Food for the Poor expects to eventually send nearly two-million pounds of rice to alleviate the food scarcity issues which Hurricane Matthew is going to cause.

The news from Haiti is grim and it's going to get worse

A main bridge linking Port-Au-Prince to the city of Cayes has been washed out. Homes are being washed away and people who had very little now have nothing.

Today, City of Miami mayor Tomas Regalado met with the Archdiocese and the pastor of a church in Little Haiti, and announced that starting tomorrow; all City of Miami fire stations will be taking donations of supplies to help Haiti.

Remember, the country has not fully recovered from the 2010 earthquake, and it can't absorb a blow of this magnitude.

"Haiti has just finished a year-long drought which decimated their crops. We've had reports their cattle has drowned and are very much in need of food," said Angel Aloma, Food for the Poor.

Food for the Poor is asking for canned food, canned milk, canned meat and money.

You can go to Food for the Poor website and make a donation and they will buy and ship supplies there.

If you're going to a Miami Fire Station, drop off baby food, diapers, canned goods and other non-perishable foods. The Archdiocese through Catholic Charities will get it to Haiti. You can also make a donation on the Catholic Charities website.
