South Florida Facility Offers Terror Attack Training

Would you know what to do in the middle of a terror attack or an active shooter situation?

While it is impossible to predict when or where such an event could happen, Grey International, a risk crisis disaster management company, wants to make sure you are prepared.

Located about an hour and a half from Fort Lauderdale in the Everglades, the 1200 acre military and training facility sits on what used to be a prison in the Everglades.

Now, the trainings are open to the public and will equip trainees with skills on everything from shooting to hand-to-and combat to security preparation.

Security expert and Vice President of Grey International Lars Nagott says that in any active situation, it's important to try and get to safety first.

"Don't be a hero, don't be nosy. Don't try to turn on your phone and do a little home video," Nagott said. He also advises that we should always be aware of our surroundings.

"If you hear something, look at it," he said.

A major part of the training focuses on mental preparation, a crucial and essential survival skill.

A chart at the facility measures mental preparation in four stages from white, which is completely relaxed, to red, which is a state of panic.

Nagott said we should always be on yellow, in the middle and constantly aware of our surroundings, and cognizant of the fact that something "might" happen.

If you get stuck, Nagott said the best possible advice is to barricade yourself until the danger passes or help arrives.

"You have to be able to take care of yourself," he said.
