South Florida Gives Back for Giving Tuesday

South Floridians got in the holiday spirit of helping others by participating in Giving Tuesday.

The global phenomenon encourages people to do something good in their community, take a photo and upload it to social media to spread the word.

Locally, the Broward Sheriff’s tweeted out a photo with the caption "Mentoring Tomorrow’s Leaders at Boyd H. Anderson High School."

Local Toys "R" Us stores made a specific social media handle called #playitforward.

“So #PlayItForward is the Toys "R" Us promotion, so if you go to that and send a selfie, that’s how we'll track it and double up on those toys that are giving," Toys "R" Us spokeswoman Susan Miller said.

Bins at the entrance to stores encourage shoppers to take a selfie while donating and use the #playitforward handle and Toys "R" Us will donate two toys for every one.

"We will make sure that toy goes to a local needy child and what’s really great about this program, is it’s a local program so all the toys that are collected within in your local Toys "R" Us goes to the local community," Miller said.

Toys "R" Us certainly aren’t the only store participating in the #GivingTuesday initiative. In addition to the American Red Cross, #GivingTuesday participants include:

• BurgerFi
• 21 Drops
• Tiger Direct
• Justa Executive Resources
• DeliverLean
• Stanley Steemer of Palm Beach
• Palm Beach Outlets
• Palm Beach Show Group
• Quest WorkSpaces
• RAM Real Estate Services
• Evelyn and Arthur
• Coral Springs Auto Mall
