South Florida High School Football Teams Compete For State Championships This Weekend

For the next two days inside Orlando’s Camping World Stadium, six high school teams from South Florida will each take the field looking to call themselves state champions.

The annual Florida High School Athletics Association Finals began on Thursday. The event is being held over three days this year – after originally being a two weekend scheduled event, but being consolidated when college football’s Atlantic Coast Conference moved their championship game in September.

Friday, Hialeah Champagnat Catholic will go for the Class 2A title when they take on Jacksonville University Christian at 10 AM. That’s followed by Plantation American Heritage and their run toward another Class 5A state title when they face Ponte Vedra at 3 PM. The nightcap features Fort Lauderdale’s St. Thomas Aquinas as the national power faces Tampa Plant in the Class 7A finals at 8 PM.

On Saturday, the action gets underway at 10AM when Hollywood’s Chaminade-Madonna will go for the Class 3A title against Jacksonville Trinity Christian. At 3 PM, Miami Carol City will face Lakeland’s Lake Gibson for the Class 6A crown, while Miami Southridge will finish the weekend against Orlando Dr. Phillips in the Class 8A finals at 8 PM.

The Class 1A and 4A finals were held Thursday with no South Florida schools taking part. If all six schools bring home titles, it would tie the record for most ever from the area in one year – matching the six titles won by teams during the 2013 season.
