South Florida Man Carrying AR-15 Knocked on Neighbor's Door: Deputies

A frightened South Florida family hid in their bathroom when a neighbor knocked on their door and they saw him on surveillance video wearing a ballistic vest and holding an AR-15, authorities said.

The incident happened the night of Sept. 5 in Boca Raton and led to the arrest of 48-year-old Kevin Joseph Flaherty on multiple charges of aggravated assault with a firearm, according to a Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office arrest report.

The report said the homeowner, Thomas D'Errico was on a business trip in California when Flaherty was captured on the Ring doorbell camera at the front door. D'Errico's wife, 17-year-old son and 12-year-old daughter were home and hid in a bathroom, the report said.

The teen called 911 to report that the doorbell alerted him that Flaherty was outside the home, the report said.

Thomas D'Errico told officers that Flaherty's wife and daughter left him a few days earlier because he had brandished one of his firearms in their home, the report said. He also said Flaherty had a history of threatening his wife and daughter and abused alcohol and drugs, the report said.

Flaherty's daughter had stayed at D'Errico's home for two nights recently because she was afraid of her father, the report said.

After deputies reviewed the Ring footage, Flaherty was arrested and booked into jail. Attorney information wasn't available.
