South Florida Remembers 9/11

South Florida joins the rest of our country in honoring the lives that were lost on September 11, 2001 when hijacked planes hit the World Trade Center's twin towers, the Pentagon and a field near Shanksville, Pennsylvania.

At 8:46 a.m., President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama observed a moment of silence at the White House. That is the exact moment the first plane hit the World Trade Center's North Tower.

President Obama then traveled to Fort Meade, Maryland, to mark the 14th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks.

Locally, several tributes will take place across South Florida to commemorate 9/11 Friday and throughout the weekend. Here are some of those events:

Miami-Dade
Miami-Dade Police and Miami-Dade Fire Rescue will host a remembrance ceremony at 11 a.m. at Tropical Park, located at 7900 SW 40th St. Mayor Carlos Gimenez is among those expected to speak. A National Day of Service and Remembrance volunteer project will take place on Saturday from 8:30 a.m. through 1 p.m. at Arcola Lakes Park, located at 1301 NW 83rd Street.

City of Miami Fire Rescue will pay tribute to fallen firefighters with a 9/11 March of Remembrance on Friday. Several hundred employees, residents and business owners will Arcola Lakes Park, 1301 NW 83rd Street.

The Miami Marlins will celebrate Patriotic Night at Marlins Park at 6:30 p.m. supporting local First Responders. A Miami Beach Fire Department truck will be on display, and there will be a post-game fireworks display. For more information and to buy tickets, visit Miami Marlins.

Broward County
Broward Sheriff's Office will host their 8th annual Patriot Day Memorial Ceremony to honor heroes who gave their lives on 9/11. The ceremony begins at 10:30 a.m. at the Signature Grand, located at 6900 W. State Road 84 in Davie.

Fort Lauderdale will host a remembrance ceremony at the Fort Lauderdale Fire and Safety Museum at 9:30 a.m. The address is 1022 West Las Olas Blvd.

Pembroke Pines will host a 9/11 ceremony at 8:30 a.m. at the 9/11 memorial next to City Hall, located at 10100 Pines Boulevard.

The City of Hollywood is planning a free concert sponsored by the Florida 9th District American Legion featuring the American Legion Symphonic Band at Arts Park at Young Circle, located at 1 North Young Circle in Hollywood. The free event will pay tribute to military, law enforcement and fire departments.
