- The city of Miami will honor the fallen victims with a ceremony starting at 8:30 a.m. at City Hall, located at 3500 Pan American Drive.
As the United States remembers the horrific moments 17 years ago when thousands lost their lives in the September 11th terror attacks on New York City, Washington D.C. and in Pennsylvania, residents across South Florida will honor those who died that fateful day.
The cities of Miami, Miami Beach and Fort Lauderdale honored the fallen victims with morning ceremonies while Fort Lauderdale / Hollywood International Airport commemorated the day with a ceremony at the 9/11 Memorial located at Terminal 1.
Coral Springs held a wreath laying ceremony as the 9/11 Never Forget Mobile Museum makes a stop in the city - the winding exhibit set up inside a large trailer over the next two days serves as a visual reminder of the brave first responders and victims whose lives were taken that day and whose families forever changed.
"The plane crashed, it was 9:16am...south tower, I knew he was dead," said Buzz Smith, who lost his son Jeff in the attack. "It never gets easier."
Smith's family later set up a scholarship fund to help over 60 students get financial assistance for college.
Miami-Dade College hosted a remembrance ceremony at the North Campus while the University of Miami will host a 2 p.m. event at the Center Rock Plaza near Stanford Circle.
Local
Several first responders hosted events as well. The Hialeah Fire Department, Miami-Dade Police and Sweetwater Police were among the agencies holding a remembrance event Tuesday morning to honor the nearly 3,000 people who lost their lives.
