South Florida Running, Volunteering and Shopping as Part of Thanksgiving Holiday

What to Know

  • Both Miami-Dade and Fort Lauderdale are holding annual ‘Turkey Trot’ runs Thursday morning.

It’s time for the Thanksgiving holiday – and whether your favorite part of the day is eating, running or volunteering, there is something for everyone across South Florida for the day.

Both Miami-Dade and Fort Lauderdale held annual ‘Turkey Trot’ runs Thursday morning – with the events taking place at Tropical Park and on Fort Lauderdale Beach at Alexander Park.

“We’ve been doing it for three years," said Andrew Lane, one of the estimated 3,000 runners at the Miami-Dade event. "We come out every morning, it allows us to eat more, have a good time.”

Events across the area will also allow for residents to give to those in need. Former Miami Heat legend Alonzo Mourning began giving out items in Overtown early Thursday morning while Gloria and Emilio Estefan held their ‘Feed a Friend’ event at the Estefan Kitchen in the design district.

The annual Camillus House celebration started at 10 a.m. at the campus located off Northwest 7th Avenue. Mayor Francis Suarez was among those helping feed a traditional meal to more than 500 of the charity’s clients.

If shopping after your meal is on the menu, malls across the area will be open to get an early start on Black Friday deals. Dolphin Mall opened starting at 9 a.m. Thursday while other locations, including Dadeland Mall and International Mall, will open at 5 p.m.
