South Florida schools were among 49 schools throughout the state that received grants from the Lowe's Charitable and Educational Foundation for school improvements.
Miami-Dade County got $24,250 in grant money, Broward got $4,895 and Palm Beach received $17,475. A total amount of $212,000 was awarded to Florida schools. Across the country, 585 schools and parents organizations were awarded grants for parent-initiated projects for school upgrades.
The schools got the grants during the fall 2011 grant cycle, and the money will be used for playground upgrades, gymnasium repairs and other needs.
"By supporting schools in Florida, we are rallying behind a cause that is important to both our customers and employees, and we're helping to build a stronger foundation for the children who will be tomorrow's employees, homeowners and community leaders," said Marshall Croom, chairman of the foundation, in a statement.
