Miami-Dade County Public School Teacher Retiring After 50 Years

A Miami-Dade County Public Schools teacher who began her career back when Lyndon B. Johnson was president is retiring after more than half a century of service - almost all of them spent at the same school.

Claudia Lewis started her career with Miami-Dade County Public Schools in 1965. For some perspective, that's the same year "The Sound of Music" made its feature film debut, the average cost of a new home was $13,000, and regular gas ran you about 31 cents per gallon.

She spent 49 of those 50 years at the same school - Miami's Silver Bluff Elementary School, most recently at a second grade teacher.

On Friday, in keeping with Teacher Appreciation Week, the school honored Lewis with a special presentation as a way to say thank you for her dedication to South Florida's children.

School staff and students of Lewis's - both current and former - were also on hand to wish her a fond farewell and a happy retirement.
