Spence-Jones' Rally Against the Suspension Machine

Spence-Jones wants to block a suspension that hasn't even come yet

Voters can't fault Michelle Spence-Jones for trying to be prepared.

The ex-Miami commissioner, who was suspended by Gov. Charlie Crist after being arrested in November for allegedly stealing public funds, has filed a lawsuit against the governor now to prevent him from suspending her again later.

Despite the public corruption allegations, Spence-Jones will run to regain her commission seat in a special election Jan. 12. Most predict she will win.

Since her criminal problems won't likely be solved by then, Crist might be put in the unique situation of suspending an elected official twice for the same crime against the voters' will if Spence-Jones pulls out the victory.

Spence-Jones had just overwhelmingly won reelection when the cops put the cuffs on her for allegedly diverting $50,000 in county grant money to help her district. Instead, prosecutors said she used the money to run a family-owned restaurant and spa.

The bold move to fire the first shot at Crist before the war even starts should come as no surprise to Miamians or Spence-Jones supporters. You have to be bold to tell people to put aside images of you in handcuffs and punch your ticket one more time.

Crist's people have not commented on the temporary injunction filing and a Miami-Dade judge is expected to rule on the matter before the election.
