Beckham Partner, Sprint CEO, Meets with Miami-Dade Mayor

Sprint CEO Marcelo Claure, David Beckham's MLS Miami expansion partner, met Monday with Miami-Dade County Mayor Carlos Gimenez.

Originally advertised as a meeting to provide an update on the Beckham United Group's efforts to secure a location for a professional soccer stadium, Mike Hernandez, Miami-Dade's Director of Communications, confirmed that the meeting also included other business affairs aside from the stadium.

It is not known what, if any, MLS plans were discussed.

Claure, a Bolivian-born businessman, lives in Miami and also owns the Bolivar soccer club.

With the FEC slip and PortMiami off the table, the chances of Beckham and his group building a stadium either on the waterfront or in downtown continue to narrow.

In May, a possible partnership between Beckham and the University of Miami was announced. Mayor Gimenez encouraged the potential partnership that would result in a joint stadium for both MLS soccer and UM football.

UM still has a long term contract with Sun Life Stadium, but former university president Donna Shalala had said in the past has said she thinks it's too big for Canes games.

This effort is Beckham's third attempt to bring a club to Miami.
