Suspicious Package Found Near UM Campus

Police robot brought in to destroy package at University

Getting ready for the first day of college can be tough enough, but some students at the University of Miami had to deal with a brief bomb scare late Monday night.

The incident began after a suspicious package was found near a bus stop at Ponce De Leon and South Alhambra Circle next to the University rail station around 10:15, Coral Gables Police said.

Police brought out a Miami-Dade Bomb Squad robot to remove the suspicious package, described as a box covered in aluminum foil with wires coming out of it and making an audible noise, police said.

A campus alert was issued as some UM students were told to stay in their dorm rooms.

Classes haven't begun but freshman orientation begins this week and freshmen and new students have been making their way to the mostly unoccupied campus.

Police have not confirmed what was in the package. There were no injuries reported.
