Students Check Out of Hotel and Into Classrooms

Renaissance Charter just got word Sunday that elementary students could move into their new building.

Students at Renaissance Charter finally have reservations for a real classroom.

For the past five weeks, middle school students rode the bus to the Hilton Airport Hotel because the construction at the actual school wasn't complete.

So they have been learning in luxury, but there will be no more studying in a place meant for reservations, not homework.

Students and teacher got the word Sunday that elementary school students would be moving into their new building and middle schoolers would have their own space.

"It's amazing. All of the space to ourselves," said 7th grader Melissa Martinez, marveling as she returned to school Monday.

Renaissance's second campus - dedicated only to kindergarten to fifth grade - has been a long time coming, principal Ana Cordal said. She now has to manage two campuses, but as a bonus, she doesn't have to deal with valet service or a bell hop.

A divided campus equals more space to accommodate the 1,000 students on a waiting list to get the Renaissance experience.

"The community has been wanting us to expand," Cordal said. "We're a state of the art school."

Still, nothing beats ordering room service during science class or being directed to class by a concierge.

"I thought it was cool. No other school is going to be able to say 'I went to middle school in a hotel for a couple of weeks',” Martinez said.
