Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School principal Ty Thompson will be leaving the school at the end of the current school year.
Thompson made the announcement at a faculty meeting after school Friday. Thompson also released a message to MSD families announcing his decision.
"It's been challenging, but I always remained as positive as possible and did what I felt was in the best interest of the students and staff," the message read. "Advisors and fellow colleagues always said take care of yourself. If at any point you feel like it is affecting your family or your health you need to make a change. That time has come. I wanted to stay and see this through but I just can't continue at this pace. My decision was not an easy one."
Thompson has been at the school since 2013.
It was announced in March that Thompson was part of a human resources investigation and would have a reduced role at the school. The school’s day-to-day operations have been managed by Principal Teresa Hall, who joined MSD as co-principal in July 2018.
The district has hired an outside firm to investigate Thompson, along with three assistant principals who were already reassigned in the wake of the Feb. 14, 2018 shooting at the school. Administrators stressed it was a human resources investigation, not a criminal investigation.
