As of about 3:20 p.m., 31 flights had been cancelled at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport and 69 flights had been delayed.

Most of the flights were to the New York and Boston areas.

Northeast Braces for Up to 2 Feet of Snow

As Northeast airports close runways, some passengers might be spending an extra night in Miami.

"We encourage you, if it is going to be a long period of time, go back into the community," MIA spokesman Marc Henderson said. "You’ll enjoy it. Miami is a beautiful area, then come back.”

Residents of the tri-state area including New York, New Jersey and Connecticut are bracing for the storm, which is expected to bring howling winds and more than a foot of snow amid potentially blizzard-like conditions Friday into Saturday.

All of New York City and Long Island are under a blizzard warning from 6 a.m. Friday to 1 p.m. Saturday, along with parts of New Jersey and southern Westchester County, the National Weather Service said.
