Lightning Possible Cause of House Fire in Miami-Dade

Power lines were reported down in at least two locations in Broward as strong thunderstorms moved into the area Tuesday afternoon.

Wires were reported down in the 4900 block of Peters Road and in the 4200 block of Southwest 39th Street, Broward Sheriff's Office Fire Rescue officials said.

A tree was also reported on fire at 2231 Southwest 50th Avenue, officials said.

The National Weather Service reported penny-sized hail in Coconut Creek along Wiles Road.

Miami-Dade Fire Rescue was also investigating whether lightning was to blame for a fire at a house near 99th Avenue and Southwest 123rd Street.

"Sounded like gunshots that went off and I heard that and 20 minutes later, it smelled like something in my house got burned," said Elizabeth Vives, neighbor.

No one was home at the time of the incident.

Authorities said the damage will keep it unlivable for months.

"Emergency mitigation involves tarping the roof so we don't have further damage. Even though it's bad, we want to keep the water out, and we're boarding up some of the windows," said Will Silva.

Friends came to comfort the family and survey their losses.
