What to Know

  • Western was one of the first schools were students began protesting after 17 people were shot and killed inside Douglas High School.

Students at a South Florida high school left class and hit the streets Monday – the latest in continuing protests from teenagers in the area for gun law reforms in the wake of the Parkland school shooting.

Hundreds of students walked out of Western High School in Davie around 1 p.m., walking north on SW 136th Street. Police have closed both the east and westbound lanes of State Road 84 at that intersection as a result.

Western was one of the first schools were students began protesting after 17 people were shot and killed inside Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School on Feb. 14.

One week after the mass shooting, large numbers of students left classes at several schools, including both Western and Cypress Bay in Weston, in an effort to push for stricter laws that include a ban on assault weapons.

On Monday, Weston voted to increase the number of resource officers at its schools by three additional officers.
