Sun Life Ready for World Cup Checkup

Delegates from FIFA visit Miami to analyze soccer bid

Organizers looking for a spot for the 2018 and 2022 World Cup will get a quick glimpse at all Sun Life Stadium has to offer Wednesday.

Officials from FIFA will take a technical inspection tour this afternoon of the stadium, where they'll meet with local representatives including Dolphins CEO Mike Dee and UM president Donna Shalala.

The FIFA delegation will be spending just a few hours in Miami, and will be looking at factors outside the stadium as well, including transportation and local hotel accommodations. Sun Life will even be transformed to a soccer configuration for the day's event.

The FIFA group is touring five cities across the country in three days, including Washington, Dallas and Houston. They spent Tuesday in New York and New Jersey, where they toured the new Red Bulls Arena.

Of the five cities, Miami is the only one without an MLS franchise. But television ratings for the 2010 World Cup showed Miami was among the top cities in the country to show interest in the massive event.

A total of 18 cities are included in the U.S. bid for either World Cup, which also includes Atlanta, Baltimore, Boston, Denver, Indianapolis, Kansas City, Los Angeles, Nashville, Philadelphia, Phoenix, San Diego, Seattle and Tampa.
