Surveillance Shows Deadly Robbery of Father in Opa-locka

Omar Alvarez was gunned down on Memorial Day

Police are hoping new surveillance footage will help them find a gunman who shot and killed a father of two in broad daylight outside an Opa-locka home.

The family of 29-year-old Omar Alvarez is searching for answers after he was gunned down outside his mother's home on Bahman Avenue Monday afternoon.

Surveillance footage shows the moments before a man approaches Alvarez, who was on the phone with his friend, Manny Lira, when it happened.

"I just heard something like a little scuffle, like a quick something and then the phone just cut off," Lira said Tuesday.

Family members said the man demanded Alvarez's belongings and then shot him, stealing his iPhone and gold chain.

"They shot him four times, took the fake gold chain and the phone," father Omar Alvarez Sr. said. "For $40-50 bucks they killed my son."

The suspect is seen running off and a white car takes off moments later. Alvarez was taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital's Ryder Trauma Center, where he later died.

Family said Alvarez was a truck driver and leaves behind two young daughters, ages 2 and 5.

"I'm offering $5,000 for anyone who knows what happened to my son. Whoever knows anything I could get a loan for my house if they know anything," his father said.

The family has also set up a GoFundMe to pay for funeral costs.
