The FBI and other law enforcement agencies were searching for a suspect in a series of armed carjackings and a double-shooting that left one person dead in South Florida.
The crime spree closed part of Interstate 95 in Broward County and sent multiple schools into lockdown Tuesday morning as police searched for 35-year-old Gregory Bernard Moore.
Multiple law enforcement agencies including the FBI searched for the suspect for most of the day after the chain of events began just before 8 a.m. Tuesday. That’s when the suspect carjacked a woman and her son from the 1500 block of West Sunrise Boulevard to I-95.
The suspect ordered the woman and her juvenile son to get out of the car; then the suspect drove south on I-95 to Dania Beach, police said. The suspect then committed a second armed carjacking near I-95 and Griffin Road and fled south to Hallandale Beach.
Just after the second carjacking, two people were shot in the area of 217 E. Hallandale Beach Boulevard, police said. Hallandale Beach Police said the shootings were related to the carjackings and that the woman who was shot is the suspect’s girlfriend or ex-girlfriend.
“It was just like ba, ba, ba, ba, ba,” Davie Normandin said describing the shooting. “Then a three second pause, then another four – ba, ba, ba, ba. So it was a lot of gunshots.”
Fire Rescue officials said both shooting victims were taken to a local hospital. NBC 6 spoke with the doctor who kept the man alive until he was transported in critical condition.
“He was very weak,” said Dr. Luis Alberto Moya of Hallandale Medical Center. “When I saw the patient, he was already on the floor. He was bleeding and not following verbal responses. 911 was already called so what we did was CPR protocol. We started chest compression and then the EMS arrived. At that moment, he was responding a little bit more verbally.”
A few hours later, the man died at a local hospital. The woman was in surgery as of late Tuesday afternoon.
After a third carjacking at Pembroke Road and I-95, the suspect then fled northbound on I-95 and bailed out of the car near Broward Boulevard after crashing, police said.
Several officers were searching for the suspect in the area of I-95 and Broward Boulevard throughout the morning and into the afternoon, Fort Lauderdale Police officials said. A portion of I-95 northbound was closed and motorists were advised to avoid the area.
Area schools were placed on lockdown as a precaution during the search. The schools included North Fork Elementary, Dillard Elementary and Stranahan High, Walker Elementary and Dillard High. The lockdowns were later lifted Tuesday afternoon.
The FBI said in a Tuesday afternoon press conference that Moore is considered armed and dangerous and has shown he will use violence. The FBI said in addition to the shootings, all of the carjacking victims were held at gunpoint.
The FBI, along with Fort Lauderdale Police, the Broward Sheriff’s Office, Hallandale Beach Police, and the Florida Highway Patrol are all actively involved in the case and search.
Lauderhill Police had two run-ins with Moore just a few days ago. He was named a person of interest in a shooting at a home. The victim wouldn't cooperate with police, so they left. A few hours later, they found Moore inside another home where police had been called about a disturbance.

Moore surrendered to police, who said he had a .38 caliber handgun that had recently been fired. He was arrested for carrying a weapon without a license. He bonded out of jail a few hours later.
FBI officials said if you see Moore, do not approach him. Call 911 immediately or any local law enforcement agency.
