Suspect Shot By Homestead Police Officer in Florida City

Suspect in stable condition after shots fired in incident involving officer

A man was hospitalized after he was shot by an officer in Florida City Thursday, police said.

The shooting happened in the 700 block of Northwest 14th Street and involved a Homestead Police officer, Miami-Dade Police spokesman Det. Roy Rutland said.

According to Rutland, the officer was questioning the suspect when the suspect took a firearm out of his pocket and started running.

The officer chased the suspect and during the pursuit, the suspect pointed the gun at the officer and shots were fired, Rutland said.

The suspect, whose identity hasn't been released, was shot in his lower extremity. He was airlifted to the trauma center at Kendall Regional Medical Center where he was in stable condition.

Police recovered the firearm at the scene and charges are pending. The incident is still being investigated.
