Suspect Turns Himself in for Miami Gardens Stray Bullet Killing of Mother

What to Know

  • The Miami Gardens fatal shooting occurred Dec. 9.
  • The male suspect faces murder and attempted murder charges.
  • The suspect attempted to shoot at a crowd of people, police said.

The attorney for a 52-year-old man who turned himself in for the December fatal shooting of a mother struck by a stray bullet while driving in Miami Gardens asked the judge in the case to give his client a lesser charge.

In court Wednesday, the attorney for Donald Young wants his first degree murder charge dropped to second degree manslaughter in the shooting death of Alicia Roundtree - saying Young was defending himself from others shooting at his car. The judge later denied that request.

Young is also charged with seven counts of attempted murder.

The Miami Gardens Police Department said Young turned himself on Tuesday. A report states that Roundtree was shot while traveling west on NW 183rd Street at 24th Avenue. After being struck, Roundtree's vehicle slammed into two others at a separate nearby intersection.

Police say the stray bullet that killed her originated from a parking lot of the North Dade Regional Library located at 24555 NW 183rd Street.

"Young pulled alongside the vehicles and pointed a firearm at seven of the occupants of the two vehicles. The two vehicles then fled through the parking lot," MGPD wrote in the report. "Mr. Young then shot at the vehicles in the direction of NW 183rd Street. One of those rounds struck Ms. Roundtree."

Roundtree was a mother of three. Her brother, Greg Roundtree, described the arrest as "relieving, more than anything."

"It's a process. It's a start for us. We got a long battle to see this through," he said.
