Suspect in Kidnapping Near Florida International University Faces Judge

The man accused of kidnapping a female student near Florida International University's south campus went before a judge Tuesday.

Carlos Arana, 42, was arrested Monday after an FIU student claimed she was abducted Friday morning.

Judge Mindy Glazer read his charges in court, "Armed kidnapping with a firearm, weapon or an aggravated battery, then you're charged with simple battery and petit theft."

The female victim told police Arana drove up to the bus stop on SW 107th Avenue and asked her if she needed a ride. She told police she said no, but she said Arana continued asking her and finally told her "I have a knife, get in the car." The victim got in the car and Arana started driving toward the Dolphin Mall. Then, she said Arana took her cell phone and started fondling her breasts.

"Given that there was inappropriate touching, was that a lewd and lascivious molestation as opposed to a battery?" Judge Glazer asked. The prosecutor responded, "No, because the victim is an adult."

The victim said Arana told her his name was Oliver when he dropped her off at the mall. Police arrested Arana at his home and took him to jail, where he is being held on no bond.

Arana did not have a private attorney so he will return to court in a month with a public defender.
