Suspect in South Miami Market Murder Surrenders to Police

Miami-Dade Police have arrested the gunman behind a deadly shooting in South Miami last week. Terrance Carter, 22, turned himself into police Monday for the murder of 22-year-old Markeith Nickles.

The shooting happened Friday at the South Miami Market off Southwest 70th Street and 59th Avenue around 11:30 a.m.

Police say Nickles was involved in a dispute with Carter outside the store. Detectives say the argument was over Carter's girlfriend.

According to a police report, the dispute escalated and Carter pulled out a gun and shot at Nickles, but missed. Nickles then ran inside the store and the suspect followed him.

Once inside, police say Carter pistol whipped Nickles before shooting him in the chest. The entire incident was captured on surveillance cameras.

Family and friends held a vigil Saturday for Nickles during the search for his killer. His family says he was the father of a 2-year-old girl.

Carter is charged with 2nd degree murder. He was previously convicted of burglary and grand theft back in 2012.
