Just a day after a man was shot several times outside of a synagogue near North Miami Beach, the mayor of Bal Harbour said a synagogue in the Surfside area received a suspicious package in the mail.

Mayor Gabriel Groisman said a padded envelope from an out-of-state address arrived Monday morning at Young Israel of Bal Harbour. Inside were about 10 pages of paper containing anti-Semitic ranting, a CD and a photograph of someone pointing a gun at the camera.

The envelope was immediately handed over to the FBI.

"Unfortunately, it's not surprising," Groisman said. "There's been a rise of anti-Semitism around the country and around the world."

Sunday's shooting also occurred at a Young Israel synagogue, but in North Miami Beach. Officials are still searching for the shooter who injured 68-year-old Yosef Lipshutz.

"Law enforcement is still investigating whether or not there is a correlation between the two incidents, but they still haven't come to a conclusion," Groisman said.

In the meantime, the city said it is stepping up patrols outside of synagogues in light of these threats.

"It must be known that the Jewish community will not cower in fear," Groisman said in a Facebook post Monday night. "We stand strong, united and proud. And, nothing any bigot can do will change that."
