Sweetwater City Commission to Vote on Extra Tax Discount for Disabled Veterans

The discount, which applies to municipal taxes, is in addition to the discount already in place by the Miami-Dade County Property Appraiser's Office.

The Sweetwater City Commission will be voting Monday night on an ordinance that would give disabled veterans an additional discount on their home property taxes.

The ordinance will have its first reading at the commission meeting at 8 p.m. at 500 SW 109th Avenue.

The discount, which applies to municipal taxes, is in addition to the discount already in place by the Miami-Dade County Property Appraiser's Office.

The city's discount will be equal to the percentage of a combat-related disability that is decided by the U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs. The widow or widower of a service member can also benefit from this exemption.

Sweetwater Mayor Manny Maroño said in a statement that he proposed the ordinance to give extra help to those who have fought for our country.

"In addition to helping veterans pay less taxes, my staff is looking into community outreach programs that will further help veterans by helping them find resources on how to further their education, job placement and housing," he said.
