Sweetwater Cop Used Stolen License Plate to Avoid Tolls: Police

A Sweetwater Police Officer is facing public corruption charges after authorities say he used a used a stolen Michigan license plate on an unmarked police car and racked up more than 530 SunPass violations.

Det. Octavio Oliu is facing charges of organized scheme to defraud and three counts of official misconduct, police said. He was being held on $20,000 bond Thursday and it was unknown if he has an attorney.

Police said Oliu was pulled over by the Florida Highway Patrol for speeding and when his car was searched, troopers found several unauthorized license plates.

Oliu was placed on unpaid leave. If convicted, he faces up to 20 years in prison.

“The only way that officers can operate under my administration, is in an ethical and legal manner," Sweetwater Mayor Jose Diaz said in a statement. "I will not tolerate Officers who betray the badge or the Citizens of the City of Sweetwater."
