Sweetwater Seniors Get New Digital Lab From Comcast

Comcast has teamed up with the city of Sweetwater to bring a brand new digital lab to its senior center, allowing some seniors to log onto the internet for the very first time.

The digital lab was officially opened Thursday at the Claude and Mildred Pepper Senior Center in Sweetwater.

The new computers will not only help seniors stay in touch, but digital classes will teach them all the benefits and conveniences of being connected.

"This is not just for them to communicate, but to have them be and feel a part of the 21st century," center director Robert Herrada told NBC 6 South Florida. “[they'll learn] How to log into your e-mail, how to log into your email account, how to Google something and how to pay a bill.”

As the seniors become more comfortable with the basics and are educated on how to use the web safely, Herrada says the seniors will be taught how to take and send photos.

Comcast's commitment to the residents of Sweetwater won't stop with the senior center. Plans are in place to bring 16 laptop computers to a nearby youth center.

Comcast is the parent company of NBC Universal and NBC 6 South Florida.
