Tampa Man Charged in Identity Theft Scheme at VA

A Tampa man has been arrested for his alleged involvement in an identity-theft scheme at a Veterans Affairs hospital.

Federal marshals arrested 24-year-old Willie Streater this week. He worked for a firm hired by the James A. Haley VA Medical Center to shred records. Instead, prosecutors say, he sold them.

Authorities say he took the Social Security numbers of at least 34 veterans treated at Haley in 2011 and 2012. Prosecutors say they were used to file fraudulent tax returns resulting in $1.1 million in theft.

The Tampa Bay Times reports Streater is being held on $35,000 bail. It's not known if he has an attorney.
