Teen Arrested in Robbery of Man in Wheelchair

Grand theft, robbery charges for 16-year-old thief

Miami Police say they've arrested a heartless teen thief who robbed a man in a wheelchair after the two got off a county bus.

The 16-year-old boy was arrested on charges of grand theft and strong arm robbery, Miami Police spokeswoman Kenia Reyes said Thursday.

Police say the victim befriended the suspect as they rode a Miami-Dade bus on July 22 when the man in the wheelchair let the teen use his cell phone.

When both men exited the bus at the Northwest 22nd Avenue and West Flagler Street stop, the suspect asked the victim for a cigarette, police said.

But when the victim took out his pack of cigarettes, his money fell out, and the suspect robbed him, police said.

The suspect took off on foot with the disabled man's money, cigarettes and cell phone.

The 16-year-old was caught thanks to a CrimeStoppers tip, according to police.
