Teen Charged After Joke About Gun in Car at High School in Pembroke Pines: Police

A high schooler who joked about having a gun in his car after a code red drill at his Pembroke Pines school has been arrested, police said.

The 17-year-old student of Pembroke Pines Charter High School was charged Tuesday with making a false report concerning the use of a firearm in a violent manner, Pembroke Pines Police said.

"Guys, I left my gun in my car. You get to live another day," the teen told classmates after the drill, according to police.

A teacher alerted the school's administration, who contacted the school resource officer. The officer detained the teen and searched his car but no weapons were found, officials said.

The teen admitted to making the statements but said it was "meant as a joke and that he had no intention to do harm to anyone," police said.

The charge is a second-degree felony, officials said.

"We are once again asking our local parents to please speak with your children about making threats of this nature. All threats made against our schools will be taken seriously, and will be swiftly investigated by our department," police said in a statement. "Please educate your children on the seriousness of these crimes, and help us prevent incidents like this from occurring in the future."
