Teen: “I Just Shot My Best Friend in the Head. Am I Going to Jail?”

Daniel Torres stayed home from school to avoid bullies

The 14-year-old boy who shot his friend in the head earlier this week called 911 not only to get help for his wounded friend, but to also figure out what would happen to him.

"I shot my best friend in the head. Am I going to go to jail?" said the boy soon after emergency operators answered the call. "It was an accident. I'm sorry."

Hollywood Police released the 911 tapes on Friday, just days after 13-year-old Daniel Torres was shot in the head while he and a friend played with a gun after school.

Police have ruled the shooting an accident. The boy on the phone gave a detailed description of what happened.

The boy told the 911 operator that they were playing with his mom's 9 MM hand gun after they thought they unloaded the bullets. They had taken it out of the boy's mom's dresser drawer. His mom was at work at the time.

"We took out the clip and we took out all of the bullets," the hysterically crying boy said.

He said Torres walked right in front of the gun as he squeezed the trigger to make sure it was empty.

"I shot him dead in the head," he said. "Oh my God! He's dead. I'm going to jail."

Family members said Torres stayed home from school at Apollo Middle School on Wednesday to avoid bullies. The 14-year-old boy also attends Apollo.
