Teen Leukemia Patient Becomes Honorary Firefighter In Pembroke Pines

Practicing how to battle flames and learning the inside of a fire rescue truck – those were just two of the opportunities that 16-year-old David Fray was granted on Thursday as the first ever honorary firefighter in the history of Pembroke Pines.

“This is just unbelievable for him to be the first one in Pembroke Pines. It’s really something,” said David’s aunt, Diane Cosentino.

There's a history of firefighting in Fray's family. His grandfather, a retired Miramar fire fighter, officially pinned David with his honorary badge.

It was a dream come true for David - as he's been battling leukemia since November.

“Since fighting the disease, he was kind of down and everything,” said Cosentino. “Now, he’s got something positive and he’s feeling the best he’s been in eight months.

Today, David was all smiles and nearly speechless with this overwhelming support.

“I didn’t expect this,” fray said. “This was a surprise.”

“All these people honoring him- he deserves it,” said his sister, Kayla.

Pembroke Pines fire officials and city leaders equipped David with all the right gear, from a brand new helmet and suit to his own radio.
