Teen Shot While Cruising for Robbery Target

A 15-year-old was accidentally shot by his friend as they searched for robbery targets: Cops

A teen boy who was searching for robbery targets in Boynton Beach with his friends in a stolen car was shot and killed after a gun accidentally went off, police said.

Three teens were driving in the Heron Pointe neighborhood in a stolen black BMW when a gun went off around 7:30 a.m., Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office spokesman Eric Davis said.

One of the boys in the back seat was fooling with the gun when it went off and fired a bullet into the 15-year-old driver's back, Davis said.

Officers arrived after receiving 911 calls and found the 15-year-old lying on the ground. The boy, later identified by police as Gian Davis, was pronounced dead at the hospital.

The trio, believed to be from Broward County, was cruising the area looking for people to rob, Davis said. A Coral Gables High School I.D. was found on Davis, authorities said.

Davis said the two friends at first made up a story claiming they had been the targets of a robbery, but quickly admitted why they were in the area.

Police said the car was stolen from Coconut Creek during the night. Police said they believe the gun used is still in the car and are awaiting a search warrant to go into the car.

The two friends, ages 16 and 14, were being questioned by detectives, police said. Police haven't identified them.
