Teen Takes Plea Deal in School Talent Show Murder

Terrance James must testify in murder trial against his friend next month

Terrance James wasn't the man behind the gun that killed a high schooler coming back from a talent show.

But he was the wheelman during the robbery and now the 19-year-old faces 25 years in prison after taking a plea deal Monday.

James, Janard Orange and two other suspects allegedly robbed and then murdered 16-year-old Gregory Smith outside of Boyd Anderson High School in April. Witnesses of the crime said Smith begged for his life before Orange pulled the trigger.

James was driving the getaway car, but faced a murder charge for his involvement. Prosecutors offered him a deal in exchange for his testimony next month against his friend, Orange. James pleaded no contest to second degree murder.

Investigators said the robbery suspects robbed Smith and his friends for some jewelry, but the shooting was to build Orange's street credibility.
